Guidelines
  • Do NOT add punctuation at the end of the number.
  • On January 1, 2001, the structure of the 010 field changed to accommodate a four-digit year. The new structure applies to LCCNs assigned in 2001 and forward. Previously assigned LCCNs will not be changed to the new structure.
    2001 LCCN Format
    Prefix =2 alphabetic characters
    Year =4 numeric characters
    Serial number =1-6 numeric characters
    1898-2000 LCCN Format
    Prefix =3 alphabetic characters
    Year =2 numeric characters
    Serial number =1-6 numeric characters
    Supplemental number =1 character (always blank)
    Suffix / Revision date =Variable length (each preceded by a /)

  • Prefixes are optional in both formats.
  • Both the year and serial number are required in both formats and are typically separated by a hyphen (-).
  • If the serial number is less 6 characters long, you must either enter a hyphen between the year and the serial number, or pad the serial number with one or more preceding zeros.
  • The suffix and/or revision date in the 1898-2000 format are optional. If included each suffix and revision date must be preceded by a slash (/). If the LCCN does not include a suffix, but does include a revision date, the date should be preceded by two slashes (//).
