| Guidelines |
- Do NOT add punctuation at the end of the number.
- On January 1, 2001, the structure of the 010 field changed to
accommodate a four-digit year. The new structure applies to LCCNs assigned
in 2001 and forward. Previously assigned LCCNs will not be changed to the
new structure.
| 2001 LCCN Format | | Prefix = | 2 alphabetic characters | | Year = | 4 numeric characters | | Serial number = | 1-6 numeric characters | | 1898-2000 LCCN Format | | Prefix = | 3 alphabetic characters | | Year = | 2 numeric characters | | Serial number = | 1-6 numeric characters | | Supplemental number = | 1 character (always blank) | | Suffix / Revision date = | Variable length (each preceded by a /) |
- Prefixes are optional in both formats.
- Both the year and serial number are required in both formats and are
typically separated by a hyphen (-).
- If the serial number is less 6 characters long, you must either enter a
hyphen between the year and the serial number, or pad the serial number with
one or more preceding zeros.
- The suffix and/or revision date in the 1898-2000 format are optional. If included each suffix and revision date must be preceded by a slash (/). If the LCCN does not include a suffix, but does include a revision date, the date should be preceded by two slashes (//).
