Guidelines
  • The 856 tag contains the information needed to locate and access an electronic resource. The tag may be used in a bibliographic record for a resource when that resource (or a portion of it) is available electronically. In addition, it may be used to locate and access an electronic version of a non-electronic resource described in the bibliographic record or a related electronic resource.
  • The first indicator defines the method used to accessing the electronic resource. If the resource is available by more than one access method, the 856 tag is repeated. When recording a URL in subfield _u, the value corresponds to the access method (URL scheme), which is also the first element in the string (e.g., http).
  • Subfield _u (URI) provides standard syntax for locating an object using existing Internet protocols. Although the 856 tag allows you to create a URL by concatenating separate subfields, subfield _u may be used instead.
  • Use subfield _y, Link text, or _z, Public Note, for display in place of the URL in subfield _u. When subfield _y or _z is present, its contents appear as the link instead of subfield _u (still linking to the destination in subfield _u).
  • To add a link to digital content that you are going to store on the Destiny server, click the file cabinet icon.
To edit the name of, or replace, the content, click the file cabinet icon.
To delete an 856 tag and the digital content on the Destiny server, click Delete.
  • No ending punctuation is added to the 856 tag.
